VOL.III: PIT & PITH

In our third issue, we will focus on stories of Pit & Pith. The pit of a stone fruit is hard, inedible, and often seen as little more than a disruption between the sweet flesh of summer fruit. What we see as a nuisance—something we hurry to discard—in actuality serves to protect the seed until it is ready to sprout and bring new life.

Pith, the soft white layer between the peel and flesh of citrus, is often discarded and can take on a bitter taste when mishandled. Where pits bring protection through hardness, pith provides a soft, spongy padding to the fruit beneath.

With this theme, we look to those easily discarded, but necessary, aspects of life—the moments, tasks, and fixtures we tend to overlook, toss out, or get stuck on, considering them a burden or an obstacle to what we really want. We find pit and pith in the difficult conversations at the center of relationships, in the confrontation of the ease of routine and the difficulty of change, in waking up early and getting home late, and in waiting for the train or the price of gas.

In the same way that pits and pith are necessary to their fruit, the pits and pith of life are, too, necessary for our own growth. What does it look like when you really engage with these moments? What new seeds can be sown?
